"Cain Rose Up" is a short story by Stephen King. It was originally published in the Spring 1968 issue of Ubris magazine, and collected in King's Skeleton Crew in 1985. It deals with a depressed and homicidal college student, Curt Garrish, who goes on a murderous sniper rampage from his dorm room. It is the end of the school year. Curt talks frequently about how people should either do the best they can with their life or die. The story is reminiscent of the real life mass murderer Charles Whitman, the Texas Tower sniper.
Elements of the plot recall King's Bachman novel Rage, including both the tortured protagonists having a propensity for violence and a classmate named "Pig Pen".
There are currently four Dollar Baby adaptations of this story being developed. One is by filmmaker Jeven Dovey and was finished spring 2010 in Los Angeles. The second one is by Australian filmmaker Robert Livings and is now complete. The third is by filmmaker Robert Kreh. The fourth is by South African filmmaker David Emery. The four received non-exclusive rights to the story.
